What fruit/veg can I eat with illeostomy (2025)

Hi! Congrats on the 8-week mark!! Each Stomamate is different and their stoma tolerates food differently, so the short answer is just trial based.

The longer answer here are some good guidelines. Peeled apples and Bananas are okay for most of us, and some of us can tolerate more heavy fiber fruits. My advice is to start with lower-fiber fruits, taking care to avoid peels and seeds. Apples, peaches, plums are good to start with if they are peeled. Other fruits can be good as well, but sometimes you have to decide the level of effort. For example, peeling grapes may not be worth the effort. Most berries are another one to avoid, a good alternative there is jelly or juice. I personally can tolerate a handful of strawberries, but I haven't tried raspberries or blackberries. I was also advised to avoid high acidic fruits like oranges and pineapple. They are higher in fiber, so for those I stick with pulp-free juice.

For veggies, Well cooked, or canned are great! Avoid stems like broccoli stems (leafy part if cooked is normally okay). If you want raw its better to do so in small quantities and not over-do it. Shredded lettuce is better than full lettuce as you can avoid some of the higher-fiber veins. Be more cautious with un-cooked or grilled veggies. General rule the more cooked the easier to digest. Just like fruits avoid seeds.

Hi Ann, I got my Ileostomy 6 months ago. Make sure when trying something new in that you try one thing at a time in case you have a problem and you’ll know what caused it. Every person is different in what they can tolerate. When I started eating veggies I ate lost of canned green beans, yams, acorn squash, onions(all kinds) Steamed cabbage, I can eat tiny amount of shredded purple cabbage & shredded carrots that can be in some salad bags.

I eat steamed broccoli but I make sure to steam till soft. The first month of eating I cut into very small pieces after that I could take normal bites but learned to chew my food much better.

I eat fresh steamed or frozen carrots, diced mushrooms only. (Sliced mushrooms can cause blockage) Steamed zucchini,

Frozen peas, Brussel sprouts,

3 months post op I added fresh lettuce in small amounts, tomatoes, cucumber, baby Sliced potatoes (I ate those by mistake and didn’t have a problem with the skin. I avoid corn, celery, coleslaw.

I eat mangos, fresh, dried & canned. banana’s, canned peaches, mandarin oranges, peeled Apples, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries in small amounts, blackberries in small amounts, oranges that are juicy only, grapefruit making sure not to eat the tough part. I eat canned pineapple but not fresh. Let me know if I can help answer any other questions.

Before getting my ileostomy I was a vegetarian. I really miss eating those vegetables. I am still leery and have not tried to introduce many vegetables and fruits into my diet yet. I have found that I can eat well-cooked peeled baby carrots and well- cooked butternut squash. I also eat pureed strawberries in my Cream of Wheat cereal and I eat baby food peaches.

I’m just very scared of eating new things. Blockages I don’t want. I have tried peeled apple. Just need a boost. My skin is breaking out and feel tired all the time

I am 10 wks post op with an ileostomy...still careful what I eat...lots of rice, pasta, potatoes, chicken & fish...beef & pork seem to be harder to digest & stoma has to work more.

Fruits lots of banana,& I have my own home canned peaches & pears also do baked apples..haven’t tried berries yet.

Vegetables, I eat cooked carrots, turnip, parsnip, sweet potato,no peas or corn & haven’t tried broccoli or cauliflower,or cabbage.

I know to much chocolate turns the output watery as does fried foods...also enjoy cheese & yogurt...don’t ever want a blockage.

Good luck..guess it’s trial & error...a real learning experience.

anna, I know you have a lot of questions about what it's safe to eat. I think this might help. It's a downloadable nutrition guide for ostomates. Perhaps if you spend a little time with it, it might give you some ideas, guidance, and reassurance.

best thing i found was not necessarily what you eat, but how you eat.... the key is chew, and then chew some more.. you don't want any chunks passing thru, kinda like swallowing mushy food..

I have had my ileostomy for 7 months. I have been doing smoothies with blueberries, bananas, frozen mango, canned pineapple, and even a few strawberries. I have recently added grilled asparagus. I chew chew chew and take very small bites. I cut up fresh spinach and saute it to add to soups or scrambled eggs. I have found anything tomato based drives my stoma nuts. Too acidic. That has been a bummer because I love tomatoes and never had a problem with them prior to surgery. I can't eat pizza or any red sauce based Italian dishes. I make pizzas with olive oil on the crust with some proteins, veggies, and mozzarella cheese. I hope this opens up some possibilities for you. Jenni

Smoothies would be a perfect choice to try. As Donspen said, chew chew chew & chew some more. Remember that EVERYONE has different results, I'm fine with mushrooms & berries, but others are not. Make sure to keep that food diary so you'll know what works & doesn't work for you. The food list that Lennie posted is something you should've gotten when you left the hospital. Learning to introduce foods is always trial & error.
